JSON to YAML Converter
Fixpio’s json to yaml converter takes JSON as it usually arrives — an API response, an exported settings object, a block of data copied out of a terminal — and rewrites it as YAML you can actually read, annotate and commit to a project. Paste your JSON in, convert it, and take the YAML out. Everything happens inside your browser, so data you would not post to a stranger’s server stays on your own device.
Objects become indented mappings and arrays become dash lists, with types kept intact.
Convert JSON to YAML
Paste JSON below and get clean YAML with two-space indentation.
Parsed and converted in your browser with the js-yaml library — nothing is uploaded. The input must be valid JSON; check for missing commas or unquoted keys if it will not convert.
Why developers turn JSON into YAML
Same data, in the format people and pipelines prefer to work with.
API output you can work with
Endpoints hand you JSON whether you want it or not. Converting it gives you a version you can read top to bottom, trim down and reuse as the starting point for a config file.
Ready for YAML-first tooling
Manifests, Compose files, workflow definitions and Helm values all live in YAML. Output from this page uses the two-space indentation those ecosystems expect, so it pastes in without reformatting.
Nothing lost on the way
Every object, array, string, number, boolean and null in your JSON has an exact YAML equivalent. The conversion changes how the data looks, not what it says — check the FAQ for the one thing JSON never had to begin with: comments.
About this converter
JSON is the format software exchanges: APIs return it, logs collect it, and applications store settings in it. YAML is the format people maintain by hand. This json to yaml converter exists for the hand-off between the two — the moment an API response needs to become a configuration file, or a generated settings object needs to become something a teammate can review. Objects turn into indented mappings, arrays into dash lists, and every value keeps its type.
Running the conversion as a json to yaml online step inside your browser keeps the workflow light: no package to install for a one-off job, no account, and no copy of your data sent to a server for processing. Paste, convert and copy the result into your project. If the job turns into something you repeat daily inside a pipeline, the same conversion is available in code — the FAQ below points to the usual Python and JavaScript routes.
Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about data loss, comments and privacy.
How do I convert JSON to YAML on this page?
Paste your JSON into the input box and press Convert. Your browser parses the JSON and rewrites it as YAML with two-space indentation, ready to copy. Objects become indented key-and-value mappings, arrays become lists introduced with dashes, and the order and values of your data are carried across as they are.
What can I use the YAML output for?
Anywhere a person has to read or maintain the file. Save it with a .yaml or .yml extension and it is ready to become a Kubernetes manifest, a Docker Compose service definition, a GitHub Actions workflow, an Ansible playbook or a Helm values file — or simply a more readable record of data that arrived as JSON.
Does converting JSON to YAML lose any data?
No — for plain JSON data, nothing is lost. YAML is a superset of JSON, which means every JSON value has an exact YAML equivalent: objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans and null all convert directly, and converting the YAML back returns the same data. What changes is only the presentation: indentation instead of braces, and quotes kept only where a string would otherwise be misread.
Is JSON valid YAML — and where did the comments go?
Yes to the first part: because YAML is a superset of JSON, a valid JSON document is already valid YAML, which is one reason this conversion is reliable. On comments, there is nothing to lose in this direction — JSON has no comment syntax, so your input cannot contain any. Once you have the YAML, you are free to add # comments by hand wherever a setting needs explaining.
How would I do this in Python or JavaScript instead?
For repeat or automated jobs, use a library. In Python, parse with the standard json module and write the result with PyYAML’s dump function. In JavaScript, parse with JSON.parse and use the js-yaml library’s dump — the same library family this page runs in your browser. For a single conversion, though, pasting here avoids setting any of that up.
Is my JSON uploaded or stored anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your web browser, on your own device. Pasted JSON is often an API response or an internal configuration, and it is treated accordingly: it is not sent to a server, not stored by us and not seen by anyone else. When you close the tab, nothing of your data remains with us, because it never left your machine in the first place.
