Color Converter

Fixpio’s color converter turns one colour into every notation your project might ask for. Type a value in HEX, RGB, HSL or HSV/HSB and the other three update straight away — so a hex to rgb converter job, a quick HSL reading for a CSS hover state and a design tool’s HSB values all happen on the same page. Start with a brand blue like #2563EB and you can immediately read it as rgb(37, 99, 235), hsl(221, 83%, 53%) or hsv(221, 84%, 92%), then copy whichever line your stylesheet, app or lesson needs.

Type a Colour, Read It Four Ways

Convert color codes between HEX, RGB, HSL and HSV/HSB as you type — the results follow your typing, with nothing to press.

1 · Type a value in any one format

HEX needs six digits, using 0–9 and A–F — for example 2563EB.

HSV–HSB

No button — the conversion happens as you type. Copy the value you need from the results list.

Typed a number that is too big or too small for its field? The tool clamps it to the nearest valid value instead of rejecting it, so check the results list if a figure was near a limit.

One colour, four notations — without the mental arithmetic

Type it once, in whichever form you were handed, and take away the form the next program expects.

From brand guide to stylesheet

A brand guide might list a colour only as HEX while your theme file is written in HSL. Reading across the results gives you a hex to hsl conversion — and the RGB and HSV readings at the same time — so the colour that ships is the colour that was specified.

Learn the formats by watching them move

For students meeting CSS colour for the first time, there is no clearer lesson than typing a hue and seeing the rest respond: an hsl to rgb conversion stops being a formula to memorise and becomes something you can watch happening, channel by channel.

Fewer slips between programs

Copying a converted value beats re-typing six digits or three channel numbers into another app, where one wrong character quietly becomes a different colour. Out-of-range numbers are clamped rather than passed through, which catches another common slip at the door.

About this converter

Most people reach for a color converter in the middle of another job: a designer has sent a HEX code, but the stylesheet, canvas or document in front of them wants the colour written a different way. This page works as a general color code converter for exactly that moment — a field for each notation, every answer on screen at once, and nothing to install or sign up for before you can start.

The four formats are four ways of describing the same colour. HEX and RGB both rest on red, green and blue channels — HEX simply writes each channel as two base-16 characters instead of a number from 0 to 255. HSL and HSV start from the hue instead, then describe how vivid the colour is and how light or bright it is. If you arrived looking for an rgb to hsl converter in particular, the same fields do that job too: type the RGB numbers and read the HSL line. Just remember that HSV’s third number is not HSL’s lightness in disguise — the two scales measure different things, which is why their percentages for one colour rarely match.

Frequently asked questions

What the four formats mean, why two of them disagree, and how this page handles your numbers.

How do I convert hex to rgb for a CSS stylesheet?

Type the colour’s six HEX digits into the HEX field — for a brand colour, copy them exactly as the brand guide gives them, such as 2563EB. The RGB result appears as you type, in this case rgb(37, 99, 235). Copy that line, or the HEX or HSL line if your stylesheet uses those instead, and paste it into your CSS. There is no Convert button: the results are already there.

What do HEX, RGB, HSL and HSV actually mean?

HEX is a six-character code that packs the red, green and blue channels into three pairs of base-16 characters — in #2563EB the pairs 25, 63 and EB are the channels. RGB spells the same three channels out as numbers from 0 to 255, one each for red, green and blue light. HSL describes a colour as hue (its position on the colour wheel, 0–360°), saturation (how vivid it is) and lightness. HSV — also called HSB, for brightness — keeps hue and saturation but replaces lightness with value, a different measure of brightness.

What is the difference between HSL and HSV, and why do their percentages differ?

They share hue, but their third number measures a different thing. HSL lightness runs from black at 0% through the pure colour at 50% to white at 100%. HSV value runs from black at 0% to the pure, brightest colour at 100%, with no white at the top of the scale. Because the scales are built differently, the same colour lands at different percentages on each: Fixpio blue #2563EB reads as hsl(221, 83%, 53%) but hsv(221, 84%, 92%) — 53% lightness against 92% value. Neither is wrong; they are answers to two different questions. In practice, HSL is the one CSS uses, while HSV/HSB is the model behind the colour settings in many design apps.

What happens if I type a number that is out of range?

The tool clamps it — it quietly pulls the number back to the nearest value that is valid for that field instead of rejecting your input or showing an error. That keeps a slip of the keyboard from stopping the conversion, but it also means a figure typed near a limit is worth a second look in the results list, in case clamping changed the colour slightly.

Why is my HEX code not converting?

The most likely reason is length: on this page a HEX value needs six digits, made up of 0–9 and the letters A–F. A three-character shorthand code, or a pasted value with a stray character in it, will not convert. Expand a shorthand code first by doubling each character — F60 becomes FF6600 — then type the six digits.

Is this converter free, and does anything get uploaded?

Yes — converting a colour costs nothing, and there is no account, sign-up or software to install. The conversion also happens entirely on the page in your browser: there is no file involved in typing a colour value, and nothing you type is sent to a server.
