YAML to JSON Converter

Fixpio’s yaml to json converter turns the YAML you already work with — a Kubernetes manifest, a docker-compose file, a CI workflow — into clean JSON you can hand to an API, a script or a schema validator. Paste your YAML in, convert it, and take the JSON out. The whole job runs inside your browser, so a config file with internal hostnames or settings never gets sent anywhere.

Convert YAML to JSON

Paste YAML below and get pretty-printed JSON with two-space indentation.

1 Paste your YAML

Processed in your browser with the js-yaml library — nothing is uploaded. Keep nested lines aligned with spaces; YAML structure depends on indentation.

Built for everyday config work

The YAML files developers actually convert, handled without an upload.

From manifests to machine-readable data

Kubernetes manifests, Docker Compose services and GitHub Actions workflows all start life as YAML. Converting them gives you a JSON version an API, script or test harness can consume directly.

✓

Private by design, not by promise

Config files routinely contain internal service names, hosts and environment values. Because the conversion happens on your own machine, none of that is transmitted, stored or logged by us.

A quick structural check

Turning YAML into JSON is a practical way to eyeball what your indentation really built — a misplaced list or mapping shows up immediately once the braces and brackets are drawn in.

About this converter

YAML is where configuration lives: Docker Compose services, Kubernetes manifests, Ansible playbooks and CI pipelines are all written in it. JSON is where programs want that same data delivered. This yaml to json converter bridges the two for the ordinary case — you have a config that a person maintains, and a tool, API or script that only accepts JSON. Mappings become objects, lists become arrays, and your strings, numbers, booleans and null values keep their types through the conversion.

The conversion runs as a yaml to json online step inside your browser, which suits configuration data you would rather not paste into a server-side service. There is no account to create and no program to install; open the page, paste, convert and copy the result. One thing to know before you rely on the output: YAML comments are dropped because JSON has no comment syntax, and any anchors or aliases in your file are written out in full, since JSON cannot hold references.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about formats, config files and privacy.

How do I convert YAML to JSON on this page?

Paste your YAML into the input box and press Convert. Your browser parses it with the js-yaml library and shows the result as JSON with two-space indentation, ready to copy. Mappings become JSON objects, dash lists become arrays, and plain values keep their types — numbers stay numbers, and true and false stay booleans.

Can I convert a Kubernetes or Docker Compose file this way?

Yes — that is the most common job for this page. Copy the contents of the manifest or compose file, paste them in, and convert. The services, ports, environment entries and nested settings carry across as JSON you can feed to an API, a script or a validator that expects JSON input.

What happens to comments, anchors and custom tags?

They do not survive, and it is worth knowing before you convert. JSON has no comment syntax, so # comments are dropped. Anchors (&name) and aliases (*name) are expanded into their full values, because JSON cannot express a reference. Custom tags such as !Ref have no meaning in JSON either. The underlying data is converted; the YAML-only decoration is not.

Is YAML the same as JSON?

They represent the same basic data, but they are not the same format. YAML 1.2 is a superset of JSON, which means any valid JSON document is also valid YAML — while ordinary indented YAML is not valid JSON. YAML trades braces and quotes for indentation and adds comments, anchors and multi-line strings; JSON keeps a stricter, simpler syntax that machines parse everywhere.

My YAML will not convert. What should I check?

Start with indentation, the cause of most failures. YAML reads structure from leading spaces, so nested items must line up consistently, list dashes must sit at the right level, and tabs must not be used for indentation. A missing colon after a key or an unclosed quote will also stop the parse. Fix the input, and convert again — no output is produced from YAML the parser cannot read.

Is my YAML uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your web browser, on your own device. Your pasted data is not sent anywhere, not stored by us and not seen by anyone else. That matters for configuration files, which often contain internal hostnames, service names and settings you would not want on a third-party server. Close the tab and nothing remains with us, because nothing ever left your machine.
